The courses on this site are designed for people who already have an understanding of how clicker training works, and have the skills to use them. I initially learned these skills with horses from Alexandra Kurland who has written books, created a series of many DVDs and designed an online course which takes participants from the complete beginning up to a proficiency which prepares you for the courses on this site. All of these resources and much more information, is on her Clicker Center website. She has also written in detail about introducing a horse to clicker training on her blog. It includes video taken over several days at a clinic held at my friend Cindy Martin’s farm. The first in the series is here: https://theclickercenterblog.com/2015/11/20/
Another wonderful resource I highly recommend is my friend Katie Bartlett’s book, Teaching Horses With Positive Reinforcement. It’s a great book to have on your shelf whether you read cover to cover, or look things up as you need them. And her blog/website is full of great information too.
Anyone interested in positive reinforcement of any species should have Karen Pryor‘s books on their shelf, such as Don’t Shoot the Dog and Reaching the Animal Mind. I attended the Karen Pryor Academy for Professional Dog Trainers after working with horses and it added another dimension to my education.
But if you are reading this, you have already purchased one of my courses, and may want to get out to the barn and get going. For this reason, I have prepared this quick and dirty course of basics. Realize that all of the above and much, much more is way too much to consolidate into a short course. But everybody has to start somewhere.
